New video from Psychic Twin: “Stop In Time”

Dance is the ultimate extension of music and being a dancer and lover of music, nothing makes me happier than seeing musicians take advantage of this. In the recently released video for Pyschic Twin’s track, “Stop In Time”, they feature five stunning, strong and sharp female dancers. Ashley Robicheaux is credited as director and choreographer for the video with Jake Saner as director of photography. Ashely Robicheaux also dances in the video along side Matilda Sakamoto, Ruth Howard, Holly Sass and Rebecca Margolick. Singer/composer, Erin Fein, and drummer/producer/programmer, Rosana Caban, are also featured in the video, playing two shamans who are attempting to freeze time.

The video was released in the days preceeding the incredibly powerful Women’s March that occurred nation-wide. About the video Erin Fein says:

“In light of the upcoming Women’s March, I feel even more proud of this video statement. This is a song specifically about stopping time, poetically. It is about trying to make great and even unthinkable or nearly impossible change occur. The video itself is a beautifully choreographed piece about the strength of women working together. We can do the impossible. We can make great change. When we work together, not even time or dimension can stand in our way.”

Gorgeous music video from Mitski: “A Burning Hill”

The video captures the gorgeous simplicity that hides the intense complexity of her message in “A Burning Hill.” The track is the conlucding song on her newest record, Puberty 2 which came out in June on Dead Oceans. The emotion you see in her face in the video is real, as real as the lyrics that gently trickle out of her.

“Today I will wear my white button down

I’m tired of wanting more

I think I’m finally worn.”

This song is a sigh of relief, acceptance of reality and embrace of the state of things. About the music video Mitski says:

“The director and I spent a weekend just driving around New York and Pennsylvania while the camera kept running, and most of the time I’d forget I was being filmed. It felt like a vacation, but it was also quite emotional, as I was thinking about the song and what it means to me now while jumping in rivers and driving down dirt lanes.” — Mitski

Album Review: “Singing Saw” by Kevin Morby

Kevin Morby hadn’t spent more than a few moments with a piano in his lifetime until he stumbled upon an old upright in his new home in Mount Washington in LA. With the piano, was some simple sheet music and a book of fundamental piano chords, enough to instill in Morby a new love for piano and the spark that became his newest record, Singing Saw. Within his neighborhood in LA, a dichotomy arose, a striking bifurcation between the expansive city skyline and the complex beauty of the natural world surrounding him. This, too kindled what became Morby’s stunning lyricism and storytelling material, the duality simultaneously reflected in the blooming instrumentals on the album.

Singing Saw is the journey of a man through life, from wakefulness to dreaming, joy to sorrow, acceptance, relief and surrender. The record is stitched together with mentions of the singing saw, both its power as an instrument and a tool and mentions of tears, always streaming, gathering in his eyes. The record opens with “Cut Me Down”, the first sound you hear, a singing saw. It is the perfect introduction to the album. It displays his simple lyricism that is deeper than each word’s surface value:

Take me as I am, a man.

And they’re going to do,

what they came here to do.

I can see it in their eyes,

They’re going to cut me down.

The following track is a powerful ballad with a commanding bass line, decorated with prevailing vocals and of course, the piano. Like many of the tracks on the record “I Have Been to the Mountain” has a blossoming quality. Morby’s songs grow, expand and became something more beautiful and sprawling than what they were at the start. A unique music video accompanies this song. According to Morby, “‘I Have Been To The Mountain‘ is a song for those struck down by the hands of evil – senseless killings which have always overwhelmed our planet, but especially recently,” says Morby. “It’s dedicated to and inspired by the death of Eric Garner.” It stars dancer, Nathan Mitchell.

Besides “I Have Been to the Mountain”, “Dorothy” is the most up tempo piece on the album. Fuzzy guitars surprise you from the get go and hold steady through the track, while Morby plays tricks with the song, it slows to a crawl, piano holding it together and all of a sudden, it’s back at full speed:

Tears will gather in my eye.

Hold my hand, ah babe you know I’ll cry.

The title track, “Singing Saw”, is the first time Morby literally describes the duality of the singing saw. The track is a dream, the singing saw cutting down willows, destroying what’s in its path and chasing after him. The song lingers on and on for 7 minutes, like those moments between sleep and wakefulness where voices echo in your mind, leaving you unsure of what is real and imagined. The singing saw prominent in the track, eerie and ominous.

One thing that makes Morby unique is his singing quality, it’s somewhere between speaking and singing, giving his music a gentler feeling. My favorite display of this on the album is “Drunk and On a Star.” His voice rises and falls as though he’s telling a story but he simultaneously is singing, changing notes.

After “Dorothy”, the latter half of the album is rich, slow and gorgeous, ending with the celebratory track, “Water.” It builds, flourishes and grows while Morby begs to be put out like a fire:

If you find water,

Please call my name.

Put me out like a fire,

Cover me in rain.

The Singing Saw is a special album and is constructed in a way in which the listener is brought full circle from the start of the album to its end. The record is out now on Dead Oceans and is available on iTunes among other music-purchasing platforms.

Album Review: “Down in Heaven” by Twin Peaks

Down in Heaven is the third record to come to us by Chicago fellows, Twin Peaks. They set out on a recording mission in the comfort of a friend’s home in Massachusetts where the goal was to focus on creating an album that they themselves would want to listen to. Not restrained by the sound of their previous records and inspired by bands like The Velvet Underground who created albums that were each unlike their others, Twin Peaks came up with Down in Heaven.

 The record is a celebration of heartbreak, triumph, being a loser and not really giving a f#ck. The record is acceptance and acknowledgment of the life you live, what you can and can’t have and what you do and do not want. In the track ‘You Don’t’, over and over again we hear them sing “I don’t wanna be yours.” Plain and simple, sometimes love just doesn’t work out in both directions. Melodically the track is fun and low key, an easy jam with hoots and hollers in between the verse and the chorus. This mellow attitude is the overriding theme for the record.

Tracks like ‘Butterfly’ feature a slightly more garage rock feeling with a catchy “Ba ba ba ba” bridge that sticks relentlessly in your brain. Twin Peaks’ ability to write catchy sound bites is apparent on Down in Heaven. The tempo is slightly more restrained on ‘Cold Lips’, ‘Heavenly Showers’, and ‘Stain’ but the boys’ energy is apparent, the record never losing steam.

They play with their musical abilities, featuring a variety of instruments on each track. The piano at the forefront of the whimsical track, ‘Getting Better’, and brass featured in ‘Lolisa’, the fellows showcase their knack for layering instruments and writing songs in a way that gives each track a unique sound. My personal favorite on this record is ‘Holding Roses.’ It has a familiar sound, there’s something retro about it but Twin Peaks puts their spin on it and creates the most ridiculously satisfying sound. Unfortunately, it’s one of the shortest tracks on the record! The chorus demands a belting sing-a-long.

Down in Heaven was the perfect record to kick off the 2016 summer and has remained a favorite of mine throughout. The record was released May 13^th on Grand Jury and is available on iTunes, among other music-purchasing platforms. Catch them touring this fall!

New music video from Ryley Walker: “Roundabout”

Ryley Walker’s latest single, “Roundabout”, is out now with an accompanying music video directed by Joe Martiniz Jr. The track was plucked from Walker’s upcoming record, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, which is due out August 19th on Dead Oceans and was produced by LeRoy Bach of Wilco. The video depicts a raucus 4th of July celebration in Pilsen in Chicago. Already-deployed fireworks litter the streets while locals clutching a Budweiser and kids under the age of 10 with gas torches continue to improvise what is their explosive and raw attempt at firework show. About the music video, Walker says:

“Fourth of July in Pilsen is the height of summer in Chicago.” He goes on, “Dozens of crews with ad hoc explosives and a beer in hand make for a blitzkrieg celebration. I lived at 21^st/Leavitt some years back and got to know this evening first hand very well. Forever my favorite part of summer in the city. This video hopefully captures a few of those moments of joy from the people involved.”

The song itself is gentle and subtle with simple guitar picking, in complete juxtaposition to the chaos of the music video. However, the sentiment behind the video and in Walker’s reflection and connection to the video content flows perfectly with the track.

Julia Jacklin is back with a new single/music video: “Leadlight”

The lovely Julia Jacklin who calls the neighborhood of Glebe in Sydney, Australia her home, has announced the release of her debut record titled, Don’t Let the Kids Win. The album is due out on October 7th via Polyvinyl. With her first single, “Pool Party” out already, she has released another beautiful track, a lilting love song with an accompanying video directed by Jacklin and shot in her old high school. Jacklin acts like a young teenage girl, shy, in love, too bashful to speak to the man of her dreams but a fire burns behind her eyes that she unleashes in the end. About the video and track Jacklin says:

“I filmed this music video in my old High school hall in the Blue Mountains,” says Jacklin.  “A lot of the shots focus on the stage where I performed in the chorus for ‘Grease’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and the unfortunate time I chose to sing ‘Wonderwall’ to a backing CD for a senior assembly. I went back there recently and saw the hall in a whole new light. When I was at school I never really thought about it, it was just a boring school hall that I was forced to sit in for long assemblies and exams. Now I think it’s actually a really beautiful space.”

New album to come September 2nd from Angel Olsen: “MY WOMAN”

Following the release of her last record in 2014, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, comes Angel Olsen’s latest project, MY WOMAN, due out September 2nd on Jagjaguwar. On this new record, Olsen still intoxicates her listeners with her longing vocals, sense of rock and grunge and her simultaneous understanding of soft, reflective songwriting. The album is organized with the A side tracks more themed to the upfront, pop n’ rock we know her so well for and the B side is decorated with longer, more stretched out tracks, indicative of her softer side. Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Santigold) produced MY WOMAN and it features guest artist Seth Kauffman on guitar in addition to Olsen’s guitarist Stewart Bronaugh and drummer Joshua Jaeger.

Before releasing her latest single and music video, “Shut Up Kiss Me”, Olsen released a teaser trailer for the track, “Intern”:

 

The first single to come from MY WOMAN is “Shut Up Kiss Me”, a more in-your-face track in comparison to “Intern”, thus it lies on the A side of the record. Again Olsen is outfitted with the shiny silver bob that was featured in the trailer for “Intern”, perhaps a theme for MY WOMAN. The goofy video features nothing short of some serious attitude but also a bit of playfulness from Olsen. She shakes her silver do around whilst roller skating down the street in the night hours, and alone, plus or minus some equally as silly young people, at a roller rink. The youthfullness is infectious as is her demanding voice.

“Female Vampire” music video from Jenny Hval + album release date: Sep 30th

Norwegian musician and creative queen of pushing the boundaries that lie between the abstract, bizarre and beautiful, has released a head-turning music video for her single, “Female Vampire.” In slow motion, several beautiful women move through the Norwegian city of Oslo, partaking in strange rituals, all in the night hours. It is stunning and simultaneously frightening in a modern vampiric sense. About the video, Hval says:

“What does eternity feel like? How do you ‘live’ when there is no death? Usually, the vampire is depicted as a lonesome, all-knowing and ancient creature combining violence, aggressive sexuality and deceitful youth. The pack behind the video for ‘Female Vampire’ wanted to explore vampiric eternity in a different narrative: in a group of romancing friends. The vampire friends move through their hometown of Oslo, partaking in public and private rituals of moving together. We also wanted to combine ideas from old vampire trash movies and modern trashy iPhone videos, resulting in an enigmatic world of time-lapse like slow motion where everything is always moving, or moving on. Not there, or not there yet.”

A new one from KSD: “Peace”

KSD has the ability to create other worldly beats that transport listeners to another place. This time, they take us to another planet. An alien love story unfolds as chrome-clad puppeteers direct the romance until alas, the porcelain beauty is stolen away in a flying saucer. Amidst this retro-futuristic scene is a truly dance-worthy cut. Synthesizers, the sound of space age lasers and an irresistible beat decorate the duo’s (Silas Moldenhawer and Jonas Kenton) latest track, “Peace.” Director Jenna Mangulad was inspired by old black and white horror movies in the making of the music video for “Peace” and while KSD admits it’s their most “popish” track to date, it’s been a long time in the making and still captures the essence of what KSD is.

New music video from Alex Cameron: “Take Care of Business”

Sydney’s Alex Cameron announced he will be releasing his debut record this August 19th on Secretly Canadian. He has already stunned music lovers with his first single the dance-worthy track, “She’s Mine.” Cameron recently released his latest single, “Take Care of Business” along with another simple but poignant music video. There is an honesty and shamelessness that comes from Cameron when he sings and performs in his own music videos. It translates through the recording and through the lens of the camera, directly to you, the viewer/listener. The result is raw, unadulterated.

Here is what Cameron has to say about himself and Jumping the Shark:

My name is Alex Cameron and I won’t waste your time. You talk about my business partner, Roy Molloy, and me, you’re talking about the online cowboys in the wild-west days of the World Wide Web. If you want to know what we’re really about, the elbow of the whole scenario, just look at all the things you wish you’d done differently. All the things you stopped yourself from doing on account of the fear of failure, or rejection. Weigh that up against your ambitions. Think about your work ethic. We’re reclaiming failure as an act of progress. An act of learning. Something to celebrate.

A word’s meaning can change depending on who utters the thing; and so we present characters – shapes are morphed and stories are delivered. And I’ll be frank – some of my stories got some low themes and some low tragic figures.  Not tragic figures like Hamlet (I ain’t no Willy Shakespeare), but modern tragics.  I got sex addicts, internet addicts, love tragics. I got villains, cheats, violent guys flooded with hormones and false bravado.  They’re all in there. Good stories need em.. Some of these characters do and say things that I never would.  Shameful things.  But that’s what villains do.

This is a collection of 4-minute tales written to provide you with insight into the inner workings of failed ambitions and self-destruction. Unedited, uncensored, and without inhibition. I’ve learned to reveal what I want to unlearn. I cast a light on the darkness and in doing so understand love and compassion. Fear is to be confronted, and to learn strictly requires failure – over and over. Celebrate failure with Jumping The Shark.
